New Lord President
The Council’s Chair, Lord Carloway, has been appointed as the new Lord President of the Court of Session, head of Scotland’s judiciary. This means he will automatically vacate his Council position once installed in early January.
Lord Carloway has been chair of the Council by virtue of his office as Lord Justice Clerk and a new appointment to this position will be nominated by the First Minister. We will update our website as soon as possible regarding the arrangements for chairing the Council meantime.
As its first Chair, Lord Carloway played a significant role in the formation and launch of the Council, helping to lay the ground for future work programmes.
He was appointed as Lord President after the vacancy arose following the retirement of Lord Gill.
