New information pack explains sentencing process in Scotland
The Scottish Sentencing Council has today published a comprehensive information pack designed to help the public, and in particular victims, better understand how sentencing works in Scotland's courts.
The pack provides clear explanations of the sentencing process, including who is involved, how decisions are made, and the different types of sentences available to courts. It also covers topics such as victim statements, and prison release arrangements
Joanne McMillan, solicitor member of the Scottish Sentencing Council and interim Chair of the Council’s Communications Committee, said: "We recognise that the sentencing process can seem complex and sometimes difficult to understand. This information pack aims to demystify the process and help people better understand how sentencing decisions are made in Scotland's courts."
The pack includes detailed information about:
- the role of sentencing guidelines
- how judges decide sentences
- different types of sentences available
- prison release arrangements
- sexual offences notification requirements.
The information pack is available to download from our website.
