Allan Findlay new summary sheriff
Council member Allan Findlay has been appointed as one of Scotland’s first summary sheriffs. Summary sheriffs are a new judicial office created under the Courts Reform (Scotland) Act 2014 to deal with civil and criminal cases sitting in the sheriff court without a jury. Allan was one of two full-time stipendiary magistrates in Scotland based at Glasgow Sheriff Court before being appointed as a summary sheriff. The post of stipendiary magistrate has now been abolished. Twelve summary sheriffs have been appointed so far as part of the modernisation of the justice system to ensure cases are heard at the right level in the right court. The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland recommended the sheriffs to the First Minister and they were then appointed by the Queen. Allan will take up his post on 1 April, remaining in Glasgow. |
