The Council is composed of judicial, legal and lay members as set out in legislation.
Judicial and legal members are appointed by the Lord Justice General following consultation (see the legislation).
Lay members are appointed by the Scottish Ministers following consultation. Individuals wishing to register their interest in lay membership should contact the Scottish Government Criminal Justice Division.
The position of Council chair is filled by the Lord Justice Clerk (LJC) by virtue of the office. The LJC is nominated by the First Minister taking account of recommendations made by a selection panel.
The prosecutor member is nominated by the Lord Advocate and appointed by the Lord Justice General.
